Our History

Many of the families we serve have never needed help before. We are glad to provide a helping hand to our neighbors who are going through a crisis that impacts their ability to provide for their basic needs.

Our founder, Antoinette Clark, started Western Wake Crisis Ministry in 1983, recognizing a need to provide assistance to residents. The Ministry was started in the basement of a local Baptist church and served about seven families each week. Several area churches have been involved since the beginning, making the Crisis Ministry a wonderful outreach for all denominations.

Over the years, the Ministry has provided a myriad of services including food, clothing, firewood, home repairs, utility, prescription, and rental assistance. Antoinette passed away in August 2001, but her vision for the Ministry remains today. With the growing support of area churches and community members concerned about local families in need, we have grown to be an important outreach that serves over 200 families in our community each month.

Our founding churches in the Apex area include:

  • Apex Baptist Church
  • Saint Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church
  • Apex United Methodist Church
  • Olive Chapel Baptist Church
  • Salem Baptist Church
  • Apex First Baptist Church
  • Mount Zion Baptist Church

In recent years, our organization has expanded client assistance to address the community's most urgent needs. Food assistance remains the largest area of support, reflecting its vital role in combating hunger. Additionally, utility and rent assistance have seen significant growth, highlighting our dedication to helping individuals and families maintain stability in their homes. These efforts reflect our commitment to creating a stronger, more resilient community for those in need.

WWCM will be closed Monday, January 20th, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Due to the inclement weather event, Dorcas and WWCM in-person/onsite operations will remain closed through Thursday, February 20.
This includes the Thrift Shop and donation drop-off, and the Community Support Center, Workforce Development Center and Dorcas Pantry in Cary, and the WWCM Office and Pantry in Apex.
Staff members at both locations will work remotely as possible and take calls and appointments virtually.
All volunteer shifts at both locations are cancelled for the day.
The decision to remain closed is based on current forecasts for frozen precipitation to continue through the evening and the likelihood of light precipitation tomorrow morning. With temperatures below freezing and heavy cloud cover on Thursday, melting will likely not start until Friday. The safety and well-being of our staff and volunteers is our number one priority.
Dorcas/WWCM Operations are expected to return to regular schedule on Friday, February 21, unless we communicate otherwise.
